Laser liposuction is the hottest thing in liposuction that we have seen for a number of years. In the U.S. this has been available for approximately 2 years. Smartlipo was the first on the scene and was FDA approved in 2007. Smartlipo is certainly still the largest in this race but a few newcomers including slimlipo, LipoLite, lipotherme and cool lipo to name a few have come along.
Liposuction has been around for years. Major advances in techniques have occurred. The most significant advances are the development of tumescent technique (injection of numbing solution) and the use of smaller cannulas. Is laser liposuction the next great advancement in liposuction?
What is laser liposuction?
There is a general misunderstanding about laser liposuction. Most advertising would suggest that smartlipo and its competitors have completely reinvented liposuction. In reality all of the basic steps involved with traditional liposuction are performed including: 1. Sedation of the patient 2. Injection of tumescent fluid (numbing solution) 3. Suction of fat. With laser lipolysis there is an additional step which involves the burning of fat just before removal. Initially, the laser was intended to be used without liposuction of the fat. ‘Melted’ fat was to be resorbed by the body. This has generally been shown to be ineffective. The fat must be removed after the burning, this is achieved in the EXACT same manner as would be performed without the laser.
The claimed advantages of burning the fat are:
1. Skin tightening 2. Less pain 3. Quicker recovery 4. Smoother results 5. Less invasive procedure, some ads even call it fat removal “without surgery or scars” 6. Quicker procedure
How accurate are these claims?
According the the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, “The only study that has scientifically compared this to standard liposuction has found no differences between these techniques in terms of the results.”
The author (Dr. York Yates) is a plastic surgeon in the Salt Lake City, Utah area.
“I have been excited about the possibility of additional skin tightening with laser liposuction. This is often a problem in older people or folks who have lost a lot of weight.”
“I was recently given the opportunity to ‘try out’ a laser lipo machine on a patient we had scheduled for liposuction. She had liposuction on the abdomen, upper hips, back, and inner thighs. The laser lipo was used on the abdomen to hopefully tighten some loose skin.”
“The experience was less than satisfying. There were not any complications due to the laser, however it just didn’t live up to the hype. Although the other treatment areas were nearly painless, the abdomen (laser treated) was extremely painful and was reported as a ‘burning’ sensation. The addition of the laser did not increase the amount of fat that could be removed, nor did I see any skin tightening.”
“The only difference I can see between the two procedures is increased pain, increased cost and need for deeper sedation. It is certainly just as invasive as traditional liposuction if not more so. I have researched this extensively and cannot find any ground to support any of the claims that laser lipo is making. Hopefully these studies are done and hopefully the results are favorable for skin shrinkage.”
Disadvantages of laser liposuction:
The purported advantages of laser liposuction don’t seem to be accurate. There are, however a few disadvantages of laser liposuction in the authors opinion:
1. Most surgeons (not all) using laser liposuction are not experienced plastic surgeons. “Cosmetic surgeon”, is not the same thing and may be an oral surgeon, family practice doctor, OB, radiologist or anyone with a medical degree. 2. The burning is painful 3. The burning requires a longer procedure with more time and risk. Does it make any sense to burn tissue before you remove it? 4. Burning of fat makes it a more (not less) invasive procedure 5. The procedure is more expensive (the equipment is very expensive)
How has laser liposuction gotten so popular if it doesn’t do what it says it does?
Purely marketing genius. Add a laser to anything in medicine and the assumption is that it must be better. This undoubtedly true in Lasik eye surgery and laser hair removal. The bombardment of billboards, TV and print media have made it extremely popular. Many of these ads have been misleading and irresponsible. The claims make laser lipolysis sound like a quick lunch hour procedure. It is simply not the case. Liposuction is one of the most dangerous procedures that plastic surgeons do and all plastic surgeons take it very seriously. The fact that the procedure can be done with light sedation and the incisions are small should not be misinterpreted as minimally invasive. The majority of the deaths (although very rare) in cosmetic surgery are liposuction related.
Many of the doctors using these devices learn to do liposuction over a weekend course, a craft that takes plastic surgeons 6-7 years. The consumer should be very careful. Find the right doctor and together determine what would be your best treatment option. The technology behind the doctor is less important when it comes to liposuction.

Many Americans have only a vague concept of what liposuction is. Simply put, liposuction is the surgical removal of fat cells through a stainless steel suction tube called a cannula. There have been many advances in liposuction procedures over the last few decades, making it one of the safest and most popular body contouring surgeries in the world…

If you are considering liposuction, it is important that you have realistic expectations. Although dramatic results can be achieved, they may not be as immediate or obvious as you would like. As with all plastic surgery, the success of liposuction will depend on a number of individual factors, such as age, skin elasticity, weight, and overall health. Liposuction is not appropriate for people with a weakened immune system, diabetes, heart or artery problems, or a history of blood clots or restricted blood flow…

There are several types of liposuction procedures available, all of which use a wand-like instrument called a cannula to remove unwanted fat. Tumescent liposuction involves the injection if a large amount of anesthetic into the area being treated; the wet and super-wet techniques are variations of this type of liposuction. In ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL), sound waves are used to liquefy the fat before it is removed. LipoSelection® uses the same concept without disturbing the surrounding tissue…
The basic liposuction procedure involves the insertion of a small, tube-like instrument called a cannula through tiny incisions made by the surgeon. The cannula then breaks up and vacuums away unwanted fat deposits beneath the skin. Local or IV sedation will be used, depending on the type and number of liposuction procedures you undergo…

Liposuction Fat Loss Surgery in India (Mumbai)…….. What is Liposuction Surgery?
Liposuction is the most common aesthetic procedure performed worldwide and in India as well. The popularity of liposuction surgery is on the higher side because of many factors, importantly peer pressure to look good, increasing lifestyle problems and improved safety and outcomes from the procedure.
One may accumulate fat because of dietary indiscretion, sedentary lifestyle or a combination of both. Women who have gone through childbirth may also find themselves in such a situation and they have to come to terms with stretch marks and loose skin in addition. It is often used in conjunction with other plastic surgery techniques; liposuction removes pockets of fat from troublesome areas such as femur (thighs), hips, abdomen, and upper arms. Liposuction procedures vary depending on what your ultimate cosmetic goal is, and whether you are combining liposuction surgery with other plastic surgery procedures. Many of them have only a vague concept of what liposuction is. Simply put, liposuction is the surgical removal of fat cells through a stainless steel suction tube called a cannula. Liposuction was first performed in 1974 and was a tremendous improvement over previous surgical body contouring techniques. What are the Possible Health Side Effects of Liposuction Surgery?
The most common medical side effects of lipoplasty include:
Bruising – painful in the short term, but treatable with pain killers and reduces quite quickly.
Swelling – typically reduces in 4-6 weeks.
Scarring – varies according to the type of liposuction used and stitching technique. Usually fades over the coming months.
Pain – typically temporary and treatable by prescription or over-the-counter medication.
Numbness – typically fades after 3-4 weeks.
Mobility – can be reduced post-operatively for a while. Your plastic surgeon will advise you how soon you can resume normal activity.

Popularity of liposuction for unwanted fat removal has generated demand for better technology which can make liposuction safer, painless and quicker. Patients and plastic surgeons alike have constantly seeked solutions that can make liposuction a better and more satisfying procedure. VASER is the latest technological offering in this context.
VASER has been around since 2002, when it was approved by USFDA for fat removal. And no, VASER has nothing in common with similar sounding LASER, which also has been used for liposuction. VASER stands for Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance. Simply put it adds the benefit of ultrasound technology to the standard . Ultrasound waves are sound waves at specific frequency and one commonly comes across it during ultrasound cleaning of dental plaque and while looking at the growing baby in mother’s womb. Usage of ultrasound for liposuction itself is not new. Ultrasound assisted liposuction ( UAL)was very popular in eighties. Vaser has resurrected ultrasound in liposuction. Vaser is 4th generation ultrasound assisted liposuction technology which offers more safety than earlier ultrasound technologies. Speciality of Vaser is “ liposelection” – meaning it caused damage to fat cells only without damaging other tissues.
]]>
is a surgical procedure like the good old liposuction, only technology and results differ. VASER is performed in sterile operation theatre by qualified plastic surgeon. General or local anaesthesia is used . Tumescent solution which may contain local anaesthetic is injected into the fat to be liposuctioned. Injection of tumescent solution shrinks blood vessels, provides anaesthesia and also creates safe environment for VASER by completely soaking the fat tissue.Vaser probe , which is a solid titanium rod of 3-5mm diameter is then introduced into the fatty layer through small 3-5 mm cuts in the skin. The ultrasound energy is delivered at accurate dosage at the tip of the probe, while moving the probe through fat in all layers all over the area . Ultrasound energy selectively destroys fat cell membrane and liquefies fat. Since the blood vessels, nerves and skin are resistant to lower doses of ultrasound, they are safe. Liquified fat is then vaccumed out with hollow suction metal cannulas attached to vaccume suction machine.
Depending of how much fat was removed VASER liposuction can be a same day surgery or may require hospitalization. Antibiotics and painkiller tablets are prescribed and usage of compression garments is mandatory for 1 month or more after VASER liposuction.
Tissue swelling is natural after any surgical procedure. After VASER liposuction results are seen gradually over next one month onwards as gradually swelling comes down and skin retracts. This is facilitated by wearing compression garment.
So what is the special ? Vaser liposuction enables larger amounts of fat removal which was hitherto unsafe due to blood loss. So one can have more fat removal, without the need for blood transfusion. Recovery after large liposuction is faster with VASER. Vaser also allows for better sculpting in tougher and fibrous areas like back and male abdomen. High definition liposculpture with VASER is gaining popularity for creating six pack abdomen look. Vaser has been used in more than 100,000 procedures all over the world and has proven to be safe.

If you have ever considered liposuction as an option to sculpt a part of your body you weren’t happy with, then you’ve probably run across the many cosmetic options that are available out there. Laser liposuction (also sometimes referred to as a “smart laser” procedure) and ultrasonic liposuction are two of the most popular procedures around, and are often compared to one another when a patient is trying to decide what is right for them.
The laser form of these procedures is done with a laser that “super heats” the fat cells in a specific part of the body causing them to rupture and split, and then the body can flush them naturally. Normally only a local anesthetic is needed, numbing the area of treatment without having to put the patient under for even a short amount of time.
This is similar to ultrasonic, but instead of a laser this operation uses an injection of gel along with ultrasonic sound that combine to rupture and flush out the fat cells.
Both use only a general anesthetic, and when done properly both of these procedures tend to have a very fast recovery time.
Both of these methods are sometimes called non surgical liposuction because neither one requires full anesthesia and both methods are designed to cause as little damage and discomfort as possible. While both have the same desired end results, these are still two very different types of operations and should be treated as such.
In many ways, there are more similarities between laser liposuction and ultrasonic liposuction than there are differences. That said, if you are considering a fat removal cosmetic procedure of some kind, then it’s best to consult a local plastic surgeon or expert to figure out what the best option is in your specific case.
Wide Awake Lipo at Andlos in Sarasota Florida performed by Dr Robert Carlson of Sarasota, FL. The cost of anesthesia is a large portion of the price of a traditional liposuction procedure. A liposuction procedure without general anesthesia allows patients to remove small pockets of fat (2-10 lbs depending on total body weight) at a significantly lower cost than traditional liposuction (often less than 00). Additionally, full recovery from the procedure is as little as a day. The more fat removed, the longer the recovery time.
Despite good health and a reasonable level of fitness, some people may still have a body with disproportionate contours due to localized fat deposits. These areas may be due to family traits rather than a lack of weight control or fitness.Liposuction surgerycan be used to treat stubborn fat pockets in many parts of the body including the thighs, arms, neck, hips, waist, back, inner knee, chest, cheeks, chin, calves, and ankles. In some cases, liposuction is performed alone, in other cases it is used with plastic surgery procedures such as a facelift, breast reduction, or a tummy tuck.Liposuction surgeryis not a treatment for obesity and is not a replacement for regular exercise and good eating habits. People with stubborn areas of fat and who exercise regularly are the best candidates for this procedure.
Liposuction surgery may be considered to treat areas of excess fat in the stomach, buttocks, hips, love handles, saddlebags, thighs, calves, ankles, breasts including male breast enlargement, back, arms and neck Liposuction is equally effective in both men and women.
Liposuction surgery usually improves contours. In some instances it may be used in a circumferential fashion, thinning an area. Since the healing process is gradual, you should expect to wait at least several months to get an accurate picture of the results of your surgery. The small incisions used for access of the instrument known as a cannula, will fade over a number of months usually becoming barely visible.
The results of liposuction surgery are usually long-lasting, but they may be affected by weight gain, aging, pregnancies and lifestyle factors.
Fortunately, significant complications from liposuction surgery are infrequent. Liposuction surgery is one of the two most common procedures performed by plastic surgeons.
Most often this surgery is performed without experiencing any major problem. The subject of risks and potential complications of surgery is best discussed on a personal basis between you and your plastic surgeon, or with a staff member in your surgeon’s office. The risks in most surgeries are similar. Some of the potential complications that may be discussed with you include hematoma infection, changes in sensation, scarring, allergic reactions, damage to underlying structures, need for revisions, unsatisfactory results possibly necessitating additional procedures and medical risks.
Stubborn fat in the neck can be very difficult to lose. A healthy diet and active lifestyle can have a tremendous impact on the appearance of the rest of your body while leaving your neck virtually untouched. Having a slender body and larger neck can leave you feeling unbalanced, and because your face and neck are the first things people notice about you, it can have a very negative effect on your self-esteem.
Neck Liposuction Procedure
Neck liposuction can be performed on healthy, stable adults who wish to shed those unwanted pounds from the area around their neck in order to enhance their facial features and improve their overall appearance. Making a discreet incision, your doctor will use a thin tube called a cannula to remove excess fatty tissue and sculpt your neck into a more slender and appealing shape. This procedure is generally done on an outpatient basis and takes around an hour to complete.
As with all surgery, neck liposuction will require a small recovery period.
For most people, this period is around three to four weeks, during which time you will be required to wear a compression band to ensure your neck maintains its new shape. During this time it is typical to feel minor pain, or experience slight swelling in the neck. Pain medications and the compression band from your doctor will help you deal with these minor inconveniences. Normal activities like work and mild exercise can generally be resumed after the first week.
Benefits of Neck Liposuction
The primary benefits of neck liposuction are an increased sense of self-confidence and a restoration of appeal. Additionally, the removal of excess fat from your body is considered by many health professionals to be a step in the right direction towards overall health.
A healthy diet and proper exercise will be required to maintain your new, slender appearance, but studies suggest that people with slim bodies tend to be more inclined toward healthy lifestyles.
The results of your neck liposuction will be permanent if proper care is taken of your body. In some cases, excess skin, unable to be firmed by the compression band, will remain. If this is the case, your doctor can perform additional procedures like a neck lift to compliment your neck liposuction.

I had my procedure performed by Los Angeles Cosmetic Surgeon Vishal Kapoor, MD at his Beverly Hills Plastic Surgery Center. Los Angeles Tumescent Liposuction is similar to fluid injection liposuction surgery except that a much larger amount of medicated solution is injected into the fatty tissue, typically two to three times more than the amount of fat being removed. Tumescent lipo causes the fat to swell before being removed. ‘ Fluid injection is a newer Los Angeles liposuction surgery technique in which a medicated solution containing lidocaine, epinephrine, and an intravenous salt solution is first injected into the fatty areas to facilitate the fat removal. The fat is then removed with traditional liposuction surgery techniques. The benefits of fluid injection Los Angeles Liposuction Surgery include reduced blood loss during Los Angeles Liposuction Surgery and reduced bruising for Liposuction After Surgery. The super-wet plastic surgery liposuction technique is yet another technique in which fluid is first injected into the fatty tissue. In this case, the amount of fluid injected is just about equal to the amount of fat being removed. This cannula delivers ultrasonic energy to the fatty tissue which transforms the fat cells … Video Rating: 4 / 5

Liposuction is an invasive but highly effective fat reduction treatment that falls under plastic surgery. There are many advantages and disadvantages of this procedure, which may be the reason why a lot of people often forego it and opt for non surgical alternatives. The following options are noninvasive and cater mainly to those who are scared of having invasive surgery.
Traditional Exercise and Diet
Exercising and dieting are the usual prospects for non invasive options to losing weight and firming up. The advantages of this combination include the fact that it is natural and have fewer risks than any other option available. Another advantage is that one becomes truly healthy with the right diet and the proper exercise. Once the individual gets used to the routine, he or she becomes relatively fit and healthy. Compared to liposuction where the patient needs to learn to control one’s self immediately with no progression since the results are immediate, these two alternatives gives the individual enough time to get used to the routine as well as enough time to get used to the diet.
Supplements
These are herbal sources that encourage the person to lose weight. Although many of these work decently, the taking of the supplements need to be done religiously in order to achieve the desired results. Some of these capsules and tablets work well with most individuals while others may suffer from adverse side effects. Many of these herbal supplements and weight loss products are not approved by the government and there may be inconsistencies with the claims of their manufacturers. This means that not all may be effective and there is no concrete evidence for many that they work.
Non Invasive Shapers
Cellulite removal systems that use a variety of methods to shape an individual and “melt” away the fat without the need for incisions are becoming more and more popular these days. Body contouring with the use of laser, infrared lights, radio frequency waves and massages are able to get rid of the person’s excess fats in specific areas of the body. Compared to liposuction, these methods may offer a less painful and risky alternative. Usually, a patient will need several sessions in order to achieve the desired results. The number of sessions depends on the desired results that the patient wishes to get. One of the advantages of these methods is that it can be repeated as much as the patient needs. Surgical methods and techniques usually have a limit to the times that a person may undergo it.
These are just some of the alternatives and options that an individual can choose from when undecided about getting a liposuction procedure. One option is to try out the non invasive technique that appeals most to the person in order to see if he or she reacts positively to it. Those who are not obese may want to try out the exercise and diet alternative before anything else since it also brings about a healthier and fitter body. Others can also try the body contouring options available as alternatives to liposuction.
Among the most popularly discussed ways of making one look slim and sexy is liposuction. While liposuction has become a frequently used buzz word, a lot of people do not actually know what exactly is. Here is a short primer on liposuction.
The surgical procedure known as liposuction is intended to diminish deposits of fat in the body to shape and sculpt it. This is done by using a canula – a thin tube with vacuum-suction action, to remove fat under the skin. Some procedures use a probe powered by ultrasound that breaks up small pieces of fat to make the removal easier.
Liposuction can be done on various body parts, which includes the thighs, hips, the abdomen, the back, neck, buttocks and face. Depending on where bulges caused by fat deposits are located, you may have them sucked out to shape your body. Liposuction can be useful for people with big bellies, or sagging arms and things. It can also be useful for men who have larger-than-normal breasts.
The liposuction procedure is performed by a plastic surgeon or a specially-trained dermatologist. Technically, any duly licensed medical doctor may perform liposuction, so special training is not required. However it is always safe to have liposuction performed by someone who is experienced with liposuction, and more often than not, such practitioners are those who have received special training.
Since liposuction, especially those performed nowadays, is just a minor surgery, it can be performed in a doctor’s office as well as hospitals ad surgical centers. Many people prefer to have it done in the doctor’s clinic since the place is less threatening or intimidating as big hospitals. Wherever the surgery is performed, the important matter is that hygiene should be kept as with any other types of surgeries. It is also important for emergency precautions to be available in case of any untoward incident. Thus it is beneficial to have the surgery performed where there is a hospital nearby.
When looking for a practitioner to perform liposuction it is important for one to be inquisitive. You should ask questions to the doctor about everything there is to know about liposuction until you get a good grasp of what is about to happen. While it is important to trust the practitioner doing the surgery, trust should be earned by checking how much the doctor knows about the procedure. The physician should be able to discuss not only the benefits of liposuction but the problems as well, together with all the precautionary measures to be taken.
You should be watchful of advertisements that promise results that are too good to be true. When choosing a practitioner, it is also important to weigh all factors and not only to look at the cost, you should consult several doctors to make sure that you have all the options. If you inquire about liposuction, you should not be pressured to decide on it at once. This is a surgery and you should have a sound mind when deciding to take it. Once you decided to go into it, you must follow all the instructions of the doctor carefully to make sure you have a successful operation. Liposuction is not for everyone, and before you decide to have it you have to be sure that it is for you.
The dream to be slim is somewhat inevitable nowadays and it is good that there are procedures available to make this happen. To know more about liposuction, contact your dermatologist or family physician. You may also learn from the various websites about the procedure as well as the many publications available out there.
